Quoting Jonathan Bowen quoting Mark Ast:

>>Beyond France, has this been done for museums worldwide?
>>I do have the Directory from the AAM, and I am able to find a list of Paris
>>museums, but not for all museums throughout France--or worldwide.
One of the problems with the Internet is that the protocols which define its
operation do not include a directory service for e-mail addresses. There are
two non-local alternatives in widespread use, "whois" and "X.500", where the
former is probably the more flexible but the latter has the advantage of being
an ISO standard.
A large segment of the Swedish museum community is registered in the X.500
system which is a hierarchical searchable database. If anyone wishes to take a
look, a good point of entry is:
http://x500.sunet.se:8888/Mo%3dINSAM%2c%20c%3dSE
I am cautiously initiating an attempt at expanding this X.500 facet from INSAM
(which is a Swedish national museums organization that coordinates networking
activities) to ICOM. The adminstrative implications of this are staggering but
some directory of e-mail addresses within the museum community has enough
potential value for it to be worth the attempt.
The easiest way to follow this development will be to keep an eye both on the
VLmp and ICOM sites.
