Berea College Appalachian Museum
Initial Statement of Interest and Inquiry
April 17, 1996
A Small College Museum, interpreting the history and culture of the Southern
Appalachian Mountain Region, seeks to explore the development of one or more
international partnerships.
The ideal partner will be a college museum outside the US with interests in
mountain peoples & material culture, but other types of institutions can be
considered.
The nature of the partnership will emerge through mutual discussion and
exploration, but might include:
-- exchange of students involved in the museum,
-- exchange of faculty & staff involved in the museum,
-- exchange of exhibits,
-- exchange of artifacts on loan,
-- collaboration on exhibits,
-- collaboration on on-line (WWW) interpretive projects, and/or
-- regular & focused student, faculty, & staff interaction via email or FAX.
The Berea College Appalachian Museum is a department of Berea College, Berea,
Kentucky, USA. It is staffed by two full-time professionals and 16 part-time
undergraduate students from a wide variety of disciplines. The College does not
offer museum studies degrees or graduate work.
The museum is exploring such partnerships to participate in an increased
emphasis on international experiences in the college curriculum and because it
will be great fun for both sides.
