I did a paid graduate internship at the Getty Center in 1985--6 months, 40
hours/wk for about $7,000 stipend (doesn't go too far in L.A.) and a nasty
competitive application process.  It was a great experience but not directly
relevant to my career goals (although it really helped me in my studies).
Luckily I had worked while I was in school and during the summers and had
enough saved so that I didn't have to get a PT job to supplement the
stipend.  I was lucky, but I would have done it for free to get the same
contacts and experience.
