Union List of Artist Names

TWO WORKSHOPS

The AAT & ULAN and Object Documentation
May 2 or 3, 1996

The AAT & ULAN and Archives/Special Collections
May 7, 1996

St. Paul Technical College
St. Paul, MN

You are invited to participate in a workshop on the use of the Art
and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) and The Union List of Artist Names
(ULAN) for documentation and retrieval in museums and
archives/special collections. Recognizing the distinct needs and
practices of providing access to these different types of
collections, two separate full-day workshops on the use of the AAT
and ULAN have been designed to address the cataloging and descriptive
needs of these communities.

The first workshop, to be repeated on consecutive days, will
introduce museum curators and registrars to the AAT and ULAN as a
tools for the documentation of the objects in their collections. A
second workshop will give archive and special collections managers an
opportunity to explore the use of the AAT to provide access to the
diverse types of materials, including images, in their collections.

Here is your opportunity to work with the electronic editions of the
AAT and ULAN in a special training facility at St. Paul Technical
College. Participants will explore the richness of the new, expanded
vocabulary of the electronic AAT, AAT:ART Version 2.1, while
completing the special hands-on exercises designed for each type of
material. In addition, the newest vocabulary tool from the Getty Art
History Information Program, the Union List of Artist Names (ULAN)
will be introduced and included in the workshop exercises.

Workshop No 1: The AAT & ULAN and Object Documentation
Thursday, May 2 or Friday, May 3

This workshop is for those who catalog and document collections of
objects and who have some familiarity with issues of automated
collections management, authority files, and information retrieval.
Emphasis will be on making maximum use of the expanded Version 2.1 of
the AAT:ART, which contains terminology particularly useful for the
description of objects in both fine arts and material culture
collections. ULAN will be introduced and exercises will allow
participants to become familiar with the breadth and depth of the AAT
vocabulary and the richness of the ULAN data, and to practice
selecting terms and names relevant to exercise examples. There will
also be an opportunity to discuss issues of local applications.

Workshop No. 2: The AAT & ULAN and Archives/Special Collections
 Tuesday, May 7

The purpose of this workshop is to give participants an understanding
of how the AAT is used as tool for the description of and access to
archival and special collections materials. Discussion will include
the role of controlled vocabularies, comparison of the AAT and LCSH,
the use of the AAT in the MARC format, issues relating to the
cataloging of images, and the use of multiple thesauri. The hands-on
exercises will provide participants with the opportunity to become
familiar with the faceted structure of the AAT, explore new and
expanded areas such as the form/genre terminology, practice
constructing indexing strings, and select a variety of other relevant
access points. ULAN will also be introduced and exercises will also
exploit this valuable resource.
