"Through Women's Eyes: Southeast Asian American Women's Experiences" is
an exhibition currently being developed. The research has been completed
and we are now seeking grant-funding to produce a traveling exhibition,
as well as a WWW version.
I need your help. Funders are asking if I have venues set up for the
exhibition. Up to now, I thought it was premature to seek venues, but I
see I am wrong. Please, if the exhibition interests you, let me know. I
am seeking letters from museums who may be interested in displaying this
exhibition once available. A letter will not commit you to borrowing the
exhibit.
The exhibition will be based on an oral history and documentary photography
project that examined the dual identities of Asian-American women as
Asians (from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam) and Americans (they
all live in the Washington, DC area) and their multiple roles as women--
mothers, daughters, professionals, community leaders, tradition bearers etc.
My partner, Uaporn Ang Robinson and I (both of us former Smithsonian
employees) interviewed and photographed 4 women (in a couple cases more)
from the four cultures (a total of 17 women) and I photographed the women
and community events, such as new year's celebrations and dedication of a
new temple.
The exhibition will consist of 6 sections: Introduction (includes
maps), 4 sections devoted to the four cultures represented (1 panel for
each woman and 1-2 panels for each community), and a conclusion. Each
woman's panel will consist of a short biography, a couple of quotes and
1-3 photos. There will also be a handout that listing resources for SE
Asian books, organizations, refugee affairs, etc., as well as an oral
history book (published by Twayne Publishers). It would be easy to add
a local component to this sort of exhibition.
If this topic is of interest to your museum, I'd be glad to snail mail
more information: an exhibit outline, photographs, sample text. Please
pass this message on to anyone who may be interested, and I look forward
to hearing from you.
