Have you tried Alexander's _Museum Masters_?  He provides a good
discussion of the fouding of the Ladies Heritage Association which sought
to preserve (and continues to do so) Mount Vernon.  There may also be
other women mentioned in it, but the story about Mount Vernon sticks in
my mind.
