Anita,

The American Flag is a very powerful symbol for many people in this
country, including the American Legion protesters and the artists in the
exhibition. One of the things it symbolizes is freedom of speech which
both of these groups are exercising.

Without having seen the exhibition and going just by your discription of
it, I would probably be uncomfortable with much of the imagery (which is
likely to be one of the artists points) and likely would not consider any
of the pieces 'great art'. I may even chosse not to go see an exhibition
of this kind. But at the same time I celebrate the ability of these
artists to make their statements in our country and defend their right to
do so.
