The Queensland Art Gallery has a nice system of portable walls for its
temporary exhibition galleries. If I recall, the walls are self-supporting and
have internal wheels on jacks that raise and lower the walls--they roll into
place and then a panel on the end opens up and the wall lets down to the
floor, concealing the wheels. Their rooms are quite high, and I believe they
must either use two walls joined at an angle, or tie them to the ceiling when
used in a single plane.

Of course, they take up a considerable amount of room when not in use, but I
gather most of them generally are, so only a few have to be stashed.

I believe the walls were designed by Senior Exhibitions Officer Joe Devilee
and his staff. I don't have an e-mail address for the QAG, but perhaps Linda
Young in Canberra can help there. Callers who can afford to ring Oz can reach
Joe at 07.840.7319 (voice) or 07.844.8865 (fax).

Joe has done a number of quite nice things with the designs of his Asian arts
galleries and native plantings outside the Gallery, too. Don't miss it if
you're in town.
