Whose pronounciation are you concerned with? Agassiz was a francophone Swiss
and probably pronounced his own name accordingly (probably ah-Gah-seh).

We americans are famous for anglisizing all sorts of non-english names and
words.

My favorites:

                Rodeo (spanish: Rho-day-oh, US: Rho-dee-oh (except in
               parts of California))

                Los Angeles (spanish: Lows An-heh-lees
                             US:  Lows An-gel-less)

                Almond (French: ah-mend, US: All-mond)
                        An aside: my family and all their neighbors grew
                              ah-mends, I snort when I hear commercials
                                  for Blue Diamond using alleged almond
                                  growers pushing their All-monds...
