One of the best introductions to ecomuseums is the entire issue of Museum, No.
148, 1985. It includes an article by Georges Henri Riviere, who is considered
the founder of the ecomuseum model. His article is "The ecomuseum-an
evolutive definition". Another article in that issue is by Rene Rivard,
"Ecomuseums in Quebec". Rivard was a disciples of Riviere's. Also see "The
Museum as a Vehicle for Community Empowerment: The Ak-Chin Indian Community
Ecomuseum Project", chpt 12 (pgs 327-365) in Museums and Communities: The
Politics of Public Culture, Karp, Kreamer & Lavine, editors Smithsonian
Institution Press 1992 that describes the first Native American community to
use the ecomuseum model. The author of the chapter is Nancy Fuller, who the
Research Manager (think that's close to her title) at SI's Office of Museum
Programs. She's knows a lot of about ecomuseums -- in fact I met her while
preparing for an internship at the Pueblo of Zuni tribal museum -- they also
modeled their museum on the ecomuseum concept.

Also, it seems to me there were several communities in the UK looking into
this model for their museums. I'm sorry, can't find my notes on those, but
someone over near you must know -- Patrick Boylan might be a good source!

Good luck, and if you care to report back on what you're working on, I'd love
to hear from you. I'm fascinated with ecomuseums myself!
