Peter van Mensch mentioned the ICOM Committee for the Training of
Personnel to consider the variables among Museum Studies programs.
Actually. the Committee (ICTOP) has been discussing this issue for
a number of years...as has the AAM Museum Studies Committee, now
called COMPT. Many recommendations have been written by both groups,
but there has been no formal or official mandate as to the structure
of the programs. I'm not sure there SHOULD be. If the content and curriculum
are top quality and include what the professional organizations
recommend (and there are specific recommendations), the structure is not that
important, in my view. However, for those interested in further discussion,
ICTOP will be meeting in the U.S. this year...October 27 through Nov. 1,
1996 in Lubbock, Texas at the Museum of Texas Tech U. the theme is:
Museums: Catalysts for Community Development. But other topics of interest
will be discussed. For further information, contact Gary Edson, Box 43191,
Texas Tech U., Lubbock, Texas 79409-3191. E-mail: [log in to unmask]
