Subject:        Security-protection conference

Just a month from now, the security and protection needs of
cultural institutions today will be addressed at the

National Conference on Cultural Property Protection in the
Washington, DC, area, February 26 through 29 of 1996, sponsored by
the Smithsonian Institution's Office of Protection Services. The
conference is given at the McLean Hilton, McLean, Virginia, about
five miles from the National Mall.

-serving museums, libraries, zoos, aquaria, and parks, with law
enforcement, funding agencies, insurance underwriters, legal
representatives; service and manufacturing representatives in a
trade show.

-a Proceedings of papers delivered, attendance lists, references,
art theft reporting forms, and papers from international meetings.

-standard issue group photograph, certificate, 1996 Cultural
Property Contact List security phone directory, work aids, and
motivational poster.

-half of what you learn is from your peers informally, at Sunday
organizational meetings, social, and exhibit preview; Monday
luncheon-trade show and evening reception-trade show; Tuesday
luncheon-trade show and Anniversary Night at Air and Space Museum;
Wednesday law enforcement luncheon with author Nicholas Basbanes
and law enforcement representatives and evening national cultural
property achievement award; Thursday Honor's Breakfast and
afternoon historic property protection site visit to Monticello;
and Friday's all-day "What a Disaster" Workshop on Disaster
Planning, Response and Recovery.
