Try looking through Tony Bennett's _The Birth of the Museum: history,
theory, politics_, London, 1995. There you will undoubtedly find a full
bibliography and an interesting, if peculiar, analysis. The author broadly
subscribes to what looks like the outlines of a developed conspiracy
theory, with western civilized man as the protagonist.
