ARCHAEOLOGY: THE MYSTERY OF THE PRESIDIO

For over two hundred years the Spanish colonial citadel of San Diego has been
buried on the summit at Presidio Hill. Students in this course aid in
unearthing artifacts and architectural remains of the vanished settlement.
They also help analyze the objects that they recover and attend lectures
focusing on a variety of related topics, including Spanish colonial history
and archaeology, Latino frontier culture, artifact identification,
archaeological field methods, current trends in historical archaeology, and
the development of research at the site. In addition to lectures, students
must complete 8 hours of fieldwork per week, any day, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Students may enroll in Part I or Part II or both.

NOTE: Pre-enrollment required. No visitors permitted.

Jack S. Williams, Ph.D., serves as the executive director of the Center for
Spanish Colonial Archaeology. He heads the San Diego Presidio Project and the
Serranilla Banks Underwater Expedition in Colombia. Dr. Williams is the author
of numerous articles on historical archaeology and the Spanish frontier, and
has served as technical advisor to interpretative programs in the U.S., Spain,
Mexico, and Colombia.
