IIC-CG ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOP
21-26 MAY 1996
MONTREAL, QUEBEC CANADA

The Montreal Area Conservators Group is hosting
the 22nd Annual Conference and Workshop of the International
Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works -
Canadian Group (IIC-CG) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, May 21-26
1996.

WORKSHOP (May 21-23)
As in the past, the theme of the workshop will be a subject of
interest to all professionals working in the field of
conservation.

Title of the workshop
Those "pests" in collections. Control of insects and fungi in
cultural institutions.

Introduction:
Still today, insects and fungi remain an important cause of
deterioration for several different materials found in the
collections of cultural institutions. Traditionally control
methods involving mostly biocides were used to manage insects and
fungi. Nowadays, most cultural institutions prefer to use safer
products and varied control measures better adapted to their
needs. Modern technology now offers a wide variety of products
and methods for the control and monitoring of insects and fungi,
which professionals in the field must know in order to tackle the
problem in an adequate and safe manner.

The workshop will consist of both practical exercises and
lectures on the latest developments in the field of insect and
fungi control, as they relate to the needs of those working in
cultural institutions.

Language of the workshop:
All the practical sessions will be given in English only.
Simultaneous translation between English and French will be
offered for all the lectures.

Practical sessions:
-Identification clinic for insects and fungi found on
collections. Examination of different artifacts and
documents that have been infested. Identification of
     specific damage by different species.
-Demonstration of the use of some of the most recent
trapping, monitoring and control methods, (pheromones,
     anoxic fumigation and freezing treatments).
Presented by:
     - Tom Strang, Canadian Conservation Institute
     - David Pinniger, Central Research Laboratory, UK
     - Maheu & Maheu Inc.

***Lectures:
Lectures by several Canadian and international experts
on the latest developments in the field, on case
studies and the latest research on the subject.

Keynote address:
     - The Keynote Speaker at the workshop will be David
     Pinniger, Research Entomologist, Central Science
Laboratory, Ministry of Agriculture of the United
     Kingdom.

Bruno Pouliot
Workshop Coordinator

*** Note that places are still open for lecturers at the
workshop. We would be most interested to hear from people with
interesting case stories or with significant new development in
the field of insect and mould control. If you are interested in
contributing, please E-Mail Tom Strang, Canadian Conservation
Institute, Ottawa ([log in to unmask]) or Bruno Pouliot, McCord
