At the Science Museum of Minnesota we administer a quarterly visitor
survey. Currently, it is 3 pages long (arrggh!) and takes about 10 minutes
to complete. It asks demographics, rating and visitation of exhibits,
rating of employees, visitation of other places of interest in the area,
etc. This survey's greatest virtue is also its greatest headache: it's an
exit survey. It takes four people at least 20 hours to get 250 responses.

Administering this survey has been my responsibility for the last two
quarters. It's not all that bad, but I thought it would be worth "checking
the field" to see if anyone has come up with a better technique for this
kind of demanding (on the visitor and my survey staff) survey. I am also
checking into shortening the survey, but a lot of people in a lot of
departments have a stake (and a few questions) in it.

Of special interest:

*Has anyone had success using computers (where visitors complete the survey
at a terminal in the lobby after their visit)?
*Any incentives that have worked for you?

Thanks in advance. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Bill
