By a happy co-incidence, I attended a seminar on this very topic
(deaccessioning) on the 7th November (Must Everything Go? -
Museums Professional Group and Science and Industry Curator's Group).

The proceedings will be published in due course.  While some of the
legal aspects covered were specific to England and Wales, and the
implications for specific disciplines such as Natural History,
Archaeology, and Ethnology do not always reach beyond those
disciplines, there is a great deal of common ground.

One name that came up in quite a few speaker's papers was the
Chatterley Whitfield Mining Museum: this was well reported at the
time of its closure in Museums Journal, and is something of a
case study.  Compare and contrast with what Derbyshire County
Museum Service did with its collections, also in the early 1990s
(again, well reported in the Museums' Journal).
