We might suggest folks choose articles of clothing, pulling them from their
closet for both affective and effective reasons, in much the same way a
traditional singer chooses from their repertoire of songs, some appropriate for
certain occasions and some for others. But the singer sings only those songs
which s/he feels s/he can sing well; we wear what we "feel" makes us look good.

The songs were gathered over time, though fads and musical fashion to meet
audience demand, but were chosen from all available options, because of personal
preference. A singer collects songs s/he likes and feels good singing. Often
chosing to be associated with certain songs. clothes and kits of costumes are
similar. We
chose our clothes because they reinforce our self image, accomplish our aims of
self presentation, and are parts of our performance in everyday life.

The reasons behind the "why we feel we look good in this," are both social and
personal.

I haven't been following these "threads," but it seems appropriate, here,
to mention that Deborah Tannen, author of _You Just Don't Understand_ and
_That's Not What I Meant_ had a piece in the New York Times Magazine
several years ago that attempted to explore the unarticulated expressive
meaning communicated by the way women choose clothing to wear in different
situtations.

She denies that men use clothing in the same way as women; but, I belive
she is wrong in this assertion. It is just that the language and aims are
different.
