     The message below is posted on behalf of the Southeastern Library
     Network (SOLINET).

     Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Florida will host a
     two-day SOLINET workshop, FUNDAMENTALS OF BOOK REPAIR, on
     November 28 and 29.

     Learn how to perform simple, economical and preservation-quality
     repairs on materials in general circulating and reference
     collections. This two-day workshop will focus on techniques that
     are most often needed in libraries, do not require expensive
     equipment and supplies, and can be performed successfully by
     clerical or student support staff after a short training period.
     The workshop will NOT teach techniques for repairing materials
     that are special, rare or archival. The following procedures will
     be taught through demonstrations and practice:

     * Tightening hinges when textblocks are pulling away from the
     cover
     *  Replacing torn endsheets
     * Replacing torn or damaged spines
     *  Mending paper
     * Tipping and hinging pages into bound volumes

     This workshop is designed for staff members who actually perform
     book repair in libraries, but will also be useful to those who
     supervise repair units. A maximum of 30 registrants will be
     accepted.

     Cost is $145 for SOLINET members and $205 for non-SOLINET members
     and FEDLINK. A $10 discount for early registration is offered
     for those who sign up before November 8th. The course will run
     from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm each day.

     For further information or to register, contact Steve Eberhardt
     at 1-800-999-8558 ext 285.
