upcoming course,"Museums in Historic Buildings"(November 13-22), being
offered in *Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia*

Class Times: 9 am - 4 pm

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 13 - Introduction
o Introductions, Welcome and Course Overview
o Issues in the Use of Historic Buildings as Museums
o History of the Restoration of Williamsburg
o Philosophy of Interventions
o Evening Reception for Course Participants

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14 - Standards and Guidelines
o Preservation Standards and Guidelines: The Venice Charter, Secretary
of the Interior's Historic Preservation Standards, and the New Orleans
Charter
o Study tour of selected buildings on site


WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 15 - Architectural Impact of Museum Use on Historic
Buildings
o Aesthetic andPhysical Impacts: Loss of visual integrity, character,
interest, and significant architectural fabric
o Assignment #1: Formulating philosophies for intervention


THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16 - Care of the Collections
o Principles of Preventive Conservation
o Conservation surveys and assessments
o Role of Conservation Technicians
o The MuseumEnvironment: Establishing and maintaining optimum
environments for the collection and the building. Monitoring temperature
and relative humidity.


FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17 - Care of the Building
o Preventive Maintenance Programs
o The Role of the Architectural Conservator
o Study tour of selected buildings on site
o Assignment #2-Survey of the preservation needs of selected buildings


SATURDAY & SUNDAY - No classes scheduled;
site visits and project work

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20 - Presentation
o Historic House Museums: Reality or Selective Fantasy?
o Collecting Architectural Fragments: Are pieces of buildings worthy of
preservation?
o Study tour of selected buildings on site


TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 21 - Site Management
o Public Access and Safety
o Visitor Amenities
o Security and Safety
o Pest Management
o Emergency Preparedness
o Assignment #3 - Identifying and resolving conflicts associated with
museum functions in a selected building


WEDNESDAY,  NOVEMBER 22 - Conclusion
o Group Presentations
o Preservation in Tomorrow's World: Should we continue to use historic
buildings as museums?
o Course Summary and Evaluation

Instructor: Dr. Thomas Taylor, Jr. is the Architectural Collections
Manager and Chief Architectural Conservator at The Colonial Williamsburg
Foundation. He is the Secretary Treasurer of the Association for
Preservation Technology and one of the authors of the New Orleans
Charter for the Joint Preservation of Historic Structures and Artifacts.
