The Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum is currently accepting
applications for the position of Assistant Curator, History of Astronomy
Department, which will become available on January 1, 1996.   This position
reports to and receives supervision from the Director, History of Astronomy
Department.

The Assistant Curator will work with the Director and the Curators Emeriti
to coordinate and produce a catalog of the instrument collection.  In
addition, this position will serve as content specialist for the history of
scientific instrumentation and the history of astronomy:  provide
information to other departments; assist permanent and temporary exhibit
teams and teams for other projects; respond to inquiries on the collection
and related subjects.  The Assistant Curator will also be expected to
conduct research on subjects related to the collection and on the history
of scientific instrumentation and the history of astronomy.  This position
will assist to increase the visibility and knowledge of the collection
using an electronic format and publications describing the collections and
resources of the department.  The Assistant Curator will participate in and
further develop the education program in the history of astronomy.

The qualifications for this position are a graduate degree in the History
of Science or a related field, evidence  of research and writing ability,
excellent  communications skills and computer expertise.   Curatorial and
teaching experience related to astronomical instruments as well as foreign
language competence in Arabic, Latin and modern languages is preferred.
Also preferred is a Ph.D. in the History of Science, the History of
Astronomy or a related field and Macintosh computer expertise.
