INTRODUCTION TO THE CARE AND CLEANING OF MUSEUM COLLECTIONS
Elmhurst Historical Museum, Elmhurst, Illinois
Saturday, October 14, 1995
9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Sponsored by the Illinois Heritage Association
with support from
Midwest Registrar's Committee
Historical Administration Program Association,
Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois
Adler Planetarium, Chicago, Illinois

The regular inspection and maintenance of collections and
their surroundings are important practices that help to
prolong the life of artifacts. A routine for basic
housekeeping and examination provides an opportunity to
detect potential hazards and correct them before serious
damage occurs. Jane D. Ketcham, a professional objects
conservator, will offer an overview of the factors that
contribute to artifacts' deterioration. She will teach
participants how to recognize and monitor the effects of
this deterioration, how to provide safer conditions for
artifacts, and how to know when objects need the expertise
of a conservator. She will offer hands-on instruction in
handling objects and basic cleaning procedures. Ms.
Ketcham will be available at the conclusion of the workshop
for informal consultation about individual collection concerns.

Workshop Sessions
Providing a Clean and Safe Environment for Collections
Recognizing Harmful Conditions and Actions
Creating a Maintenance Plan and Establishing a Routine
Developing Safe Handling and Cleaning Procedures
Knowing When Conservation is Needed

Registration Deadline is OCTOBER 2. The $35 fee includes
lunch, refreshments, and an educational packet. The museum
is handicap-accessible. Motel accommodations are available.
The museum is conveniently located one block from the Elmhurst
METRA commuter train stop. Workshop registration is limited
to 30 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
