What makes it possible for a community to value and care for
a museum, and make it serve the community's aspirations for self-
determination? Since June, Teresa Morales, coordinator of the
Program of Community Museums and Ecomuseums in Oaxaca, Mexico has
examined the topic under the sponsorship of Nancy Fuller, Center
for Museum Studies and William Merrill and Christine Kreamer,
NMNH.

Ms. Morales' research has looked at the creation of the Ak-
Chin Indian Community Him Dak, an ecomuseum in Arizona, in terms
of the power exercised by the tribal government, and of the
community's ability to take an active role in its technical and
creative tasks. The goal of the study is to produce a paper
comparing the Him Dak with the community museums of Oaxaca,
Mexico.

We hope you will join us. Refreshments will be served.
Please r.s.v.p. to Stacey Burkhardt (telephone 202-357-3101 or
