Deborah,
There are a variety of formulas for hanging art, and the better ones take
a couple of things into account.  Reflectance of the surface of the art
and the angle/distance from the art of the light source.

The goal should be to make the art visible to the average viewer without
undue distraction from the mechanics of the gallery.
