At the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, New York, we are in the process of
developing what will be called the Gill Education Center. This will fall
into the category, I think, of an orientation center for the rest of the
museum, in that it will use three specific works from the Gallery's
collection as points of reference for a specific theme, color (for the first
installation). There will be a variety of custom-designed activities and
environments which will engage the visitor in re-examining his/her own
experience of looking at art. The installation is being designed by Allen
and Ellen Wexler. It is intended to be enjoyed by visitors of all ages, but
primarily for families with children. There will also be a small reading and
reference area. We are also working on an interactive computer program, but
that may or may not be included in this center. The center is not intended
to be staffed. It will be located beyond the admissions desk, so visitors
will have to be members or will have to pay to access it.
