I spent several years dealing with computerizing archaeological field,
lab, and repository records. This included inventory records, field
notes, analysis sheets, accessioning records, etc.  I would be real
hesitant about doing away with paper records.  There is no way to track
back to find an error. And, believe me, errors do happen!! And with catalog
data, you have nothing to check it against but the item itself, which
may be difficult to find or get to. And I think people tend to be more
error-prone with direct entry to a computer.

From the experiences I've had, I think it's a bad idea. Just my two cents
worth.
