Yes, indeed the Smithsonian produces recordings of public domain music
(as well as copyrighted music for which the Institution pays
royalties--because although we're non-profit, we do profit-making
projects, as do many museums. But of course, those recordings are
copyrighted! Finding public domain music to perform is really not a
problem. You just need a good music library.
