As an art director of a museum publication, I rely as much
as possible upon volunteer (intern) help. However, the time
to train volunteers in any specialized task, not to mention
the space to accommodate even an extra desk is always short
in the non-profit sector. As much as volunteers are sought
for their help, they are and must be screened for their
commitment to long-term tasks, ability to "self-start" and
in some cases, expertise in particular tasks. All too often,
it's a matter of just not being worth the time. It's just
easier to do the extra work myself sometimes.
Anyone who has luck in dealing with these dilemmas, who
has figured out how to incorporate volunteer work into their
routines, please tell me what your secrets to success are. I
would appreciate any guidance you might offer.
