I just had to follow up on a remark Eric Siegel made about the NEH being
somewhat less defendable from a grass roots perspective.  Eric, I assume
you're just not as familiar with the NEH, but I think their money has an
even greater grass roots impact than the NEA.  Through allocations to
state humanities agencies, the NEH funds countless numbers of book discus-
sion groups in local libraries, exhibits in small historical societies,
oral history projects, research into local and community history.  I
could go on and on.  In any case, the NEH has had a tremendous impact
on the pursuit of the humanities at the local level.
