Your research programme is where/what you make it.  Lots of programmes in
American Studies, some with material culture emphases available.  For my
own needs I am completing a doctoral program in sociology, with emphasis
on the production of culture and supporting work in areas like education,
occupations/professions and related departments (Anthropology, Visual
Arts, History).  If you know what you want to examine, you can create a
doctoral programme focussing on museums from a variety of disciplines.
