My husband and I are considering buying an historic house in Waterford, VA.
The village of Waterford is a National Historic Landmark (yes the whole
village and some of the surrounding area). The house we would like to buy is
sided with those ugly asbestos shingles and we would like to remove them.

The original clapboarding appears to be in place under the shingles. We have
not been able to pull shingles to find out, but the clapboard is visible in
two spots and the window casements look as if the clapboard is still there.
The removal of the asbestos will cost upwards of $2.50/sq. foot. The house
has roughly 1500 sq. feet of asbestos shingles.

We are interested in applying for grant monies to remove the shingles and
restore the original clapboarding. Can anyone recommend which agencies would
be appropriate to apply to and tell us of any success/horror stories involved
with grants for an historic house and/or asbestos shingle removal.

You can reply to me directly or to the list if you feel others will be
interested.

Thank you for your time and help!
