According to the Guy Gugliotta in the Washington Post (1/31/1995), the Navy's
last Polaris class submarine, the USS Vallejo is being decommissioned. The city
of Vallejo, CA would like to acquire the sub and dock it at the Mare Island
Historical Park which used to be the shipyard the Vallejo was built at.
Unfortunately, due to law the Navy can't just turn the sub over to the city.
The city has to buy it (and safety modifications) for $10 million. And while
the city has asked for additional time, the Navy is giving them until Feb. 3rd
to raise the money. Otherwise the Navy will pay $9.2 million to have the sub
recycled into razor blades.

Personally, I think turning it into a museum is a great idea. The WW2-era USS
Ling is docked in Hackensack, NJ and is a lot of fun to go through. Most people
without a relative in the Navy never really get a feel for what the shipboard
life is like. Anyway, my opinions are obviously my own on this.
