As the one in charge of photo research at the Field Museum in Chicago, I want
to see as many images as possible on the Internet and WWW. My 'vision' is
that people can access small, unpublishable quality scans of our images, and
then order the hard copy (print, slide, large format transparency) from us. I
would say that half of my day is spent making photocopies and faxes of our
images, sending them, waiting for a reply, etc. I, for one, would be happy to
use those 3 or 4 hours scanning photos and putting them on the Net instead.

However, as one who accesses the Net with a 14,400 baud connection, usually
from home where it's a bit quieter, I'm aware that images take
forever-to-load, and many publishers and free-lance photo researchers don't
have the resources available to have high speed connections. I'd guess that
the "audience" for our photo collection (Natural History) is publishers,
scientists, scholars, and students, in that order.

Anyone else out there in the photo/museum world? I'd love to hear comments
about who the audience is and what "should" be available.
