Most people in library science prefer the term "information specialists". I
ran across the term "knowledge engineer" while still in library school and was
unaware of its origin. The comment "my personal favorite" was delivered with
tongue firmly in cheek (*sigh* sarcasm just doesn't come across well in
electronic formats!). ;)
