I think nuts-and-bolts questions are one terrific use of the resource.
The only catch is that many simple "repair" questions for
museum/historical/research objects need very complex answers, and most
of those answers require discussion with the custodian of the object. I
prefer to have people call me with questions about paper, books, or
related materials so I can hook them up with a conservator with
experience in the problem, or I can ask enough questions to be confident
my solution is responsible for the circumstances. It also takes me a lot
less time to talk through a problem than to write an extensive answer.
