We currently use a custom-designed 4th Dimension software program for our
collections management. Our object and works on paper collections are
computerized in this system, and we've been using it for about two years.
It's a relational database, allowing for ease of searching and data entry.
We have also scanned black and white images into it, although not many.
One plus for us was that we were able to completely customize the program
to fit our needs. Fortunately, we were able to hire outside programmers to
design the program, and we have an in-house computer support specialist to
handle general enquiries.
Our institution also uses 4th Dimension for its museum store inventory,
membership database, and our purchasing system--all with great success! If
you have any specific questions, I'm happy to answer them directly via
e-mail, phone, or snail mail.
