The brochure for our summer course from International Academic Projects,
"Preventive Conservation of Geological Materials," is finally in hand.
This course will be held June 13-17, 1995, at the San Diego Natural
History Museum, USA. Transportation. lodging, and surfboard wax expenses
not covered.
 
This course will focus on the evaluation, care, and preventive
conservation of geological-origin materials, including collections in
geology (including mineralogy and meteoritic/extraterrestrial collections),
archeology, paleontology, art, and architecture. If there is
sufficient interest, a one-day workshop on care of in situ materials will
be added at no extra cost.
 
The course is designed to be of use to museum, conservation, and
collections workers, amateur and professional, at all levels of
experience. International Academic Projects courses succeed in uniting a
cross-disciplinary range of participants to identify and solve common
problems. If you are interested, then you are very likely to find the
course useful, practical, and entertaining.
 
Course instructors are Chris Collins, Geological Conservation Unit,
Cambridge, UK, and Sally Shelton, San Diego Natural History Museum. This
will be the first time this course has been offered in the US.
 
Course fees are $350 before May 15, $375 after. This does not include
transportation or lodging expenses. We encourage participants to stay at
the Balboa Park Inn, a bed-and-breakfast within easy walking distance of
the park and museums, which does offer discounts for museum guests. Other
options are available.
 
The San Diego Natural History Museum is in historic Balboa Park, near the
zoo and other museums. It is near the airport, train terminal, and bus stops.
 
Course readings, information on San Diego and environs, and other
information will be mailed two months in advance of the course.
Certification will be provided upon course completion. Participants are
encouraged to bring slides, videos, or specimens of particular problems
from their home collections or institutions.
