Before beginning any conservation work, I have found that it is wise to ask
people coming into the museum with problem pieces to weigh the
sentimental/historical/monetary value of the pieces against the cost of a
competent conservator.  I agree with the advice given that you do not want
to attempt major surgery with a wrench and pocket knife. On the other hand,
if the same print can be acquired in primo condition at 1/10th the price of
a conservator's efforts, well . . .
