Barry,
I do not know if you are aware of a similar incident that happend in Los
Angeles
approx. 2 years ago. The Southwest Museum director was charged with the
same crime ast the Curator at the Brooklyn Museum. Curiously enough, the
Southwest museum also specializes in the same area as well. The director
not only bought pieces and sold them at highly inflated prices to the
museum through a third party; he also had forgeries made from existing
pieces in the collection which he installed in place of the originals
which he subsequently sold to the trade. The whole thing was a big
scandal which was followed very closely by the LA Times and other news
magazines. You should be able to find copies in microfilm in a local
library or have them ordered from the LA Times librarian.
Hope this helps
