Indeed, problems inherent in scanning on your own, may make any museum
think twice about undertaking the project themselves.  There are too many
variables introduced by ordinary scanners and my imperfect media.  Before
anybody decides to undertake a project such as is cited in this thread
(imaging), I'd suggest looking into the services of Luna Imaging, a
consortium between the Getty Trust's AHIP and Eastman Kodak.  They have
studies issues regarding the quality of scanning, image resolution,
audience perception, and functional use.
