The catalogue for the exhibition "Altered States: Conservation, Analysis,
and the Interpretation of Works of Art" is available from the Mount
Holyoke College Art Museum (South Hadley, Massachusetts 01075-1499) at a
cost of $33.50 including tax and postage. The catalogue is 176 pp., fully
illustrated in color. It includes three essays: Wendy Watson,
"Conservation and Historical Consciousness," David Carrier, "Restoration
as Interpretation: A Philosopher's Viewpoint," and James Martin
"Applications of Science in the Analysis, Conservation, and Interpretation
of Works of Art." Entries for each of the 33 works in the exhibition
follow and the objects range from Greek ceramics and Roman sculpture to
American 19th-century furniture and contemporary paintings. A glossary
and selected bibliography is also included.
The exhibition closes at Mount Holyoke on 31 May and will be seen
at the Clark Art Institute (Williamstown, MA; 23 July - 18 September 1994)
and the National Academy of Design (New York City; 5 October - 27 November
1994). A symposium is also being planned for Saturday, 12 November, and
will take place at the Equitable Center in New York.
