NMAI will open its New York branch---the George Gustave Heye Center
at the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House---in New York in October.
 The Heye Center will be the museum's permanent New York exhibition
site.  Meanwhile, plans are underway for a building on the National
Mall in DC, to open in 2001.  That building on the Mall will be the
museum's central location.
