Announcing The 1994 annual conference of the Documentation
Committee (CIDOC) of the International Council of Museums (ICOM),
and the Museum Computer Network (MCN):

CULTURES CONNECTED: AUTOMATING THE AMERICAS AND BEYOND

Washington, DC: (CIDOC) August 28-31; (MCN) August 31-
September 3, 1994.

Hosted by the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art
and the National Park Service.

If you ask yourself how other museum professionals resolve the
increasingly important issues of museum automation, this symposium
is important to you! It will provide a forum where you can learn
more about and discuss with colleagues from around the world the
latest developments in image capture, standards, networking and
information management.

CIDOC, the international forum for the documentation interests
of museums and similar organizations, has over 500 members. It is
part of ICOM, which consists of 112 national and international
committees. MCN exists to foster the cultural aims of museums
through the application of computer technology. For this
conference, MCN and CIDOC are pooling their resources to present
the international museum community with an opportunity to discuss
and explore new museum policies, practices and products. This
year's theme, "Cultures Connected", will draw together participants
from the world over for an unprecedented exchange.

The conference will include plenary sessions with papers and
reports on documentation initiatives; Working Group sessions during
which members of the Groups pursue projects for the organizations
they represent; topical sessions on specific issues; and visits to
museums to review their documentation practices.

I should introduce myself; My name is Bill Buick. Employed at the
Smithsonian Institution, I edit and post this bulletin in my spare
time. I will circulate an electronic update every two weeks up to
the conference dates to keep you informed of newly scheduled
programs, sessions, and speakers. For registration information,
