I haven't seen the New Yorker article yet, but are they referring to library
"online databases" or online catalogs (based within the library as opposed to
online on the Internet)?
  Not only has ASU discarded the catalog cards, but we are using them for
scratch paper. We are members of the CARL system (although that may soon
change).
