SAVING ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESOURCES THROUGH PUBLIC EDUCATION
                            ARE YOU INVOLVED?

The Public Education Committee of the Society for American Archaeology
was founded in order to lead the SAA in an aggressive public education
program. The Committee's goals are:

*To encourage cooperation among the SAA and other professional
organizations on public education issues
*To create a network of archaeologists and educators who teach
archaeology in a public setting
*To collect and make available teaching materials related to
archaeology
*To promote preservation as a cultural norm
*to educate the discipline of archaeology to the need for public
education.

The Committee is seeking to improve its dialogue with museums and museum
professionals who are educating the public about archaeology, archaeolo-
gical resources or our nation's history/prehistory through archaeological
methods. A feature column in the Committee's quarterly newsletter,
"Archaeology and Public Education" (reaching about 4,000 nationwide),
reports on archaeological exhibits and education programs sponsored by
museums.

Any museums who are currently running special exhibits or public education
programs on North American archaeology are encouraged to send a brief (50
words) description or their exhibits or programs with a contact name and
phone number to:
