JA> Should a reply to a query go to the list or only to the asker?

Netiquette (not that anyone follows that these days) says that replies
to a question should go to the asker, with that person supplying a
summary of the responses to the list or newsgroup after some time has
passed.

The exception to this is if the information being communicated is
likely to be of general interest to the list-at-large. Thus, if
someone asks for an address, or a reference, replies should probably
go to that person; while if the question is about, say, loan policies
in small history museums, discussion on the list might be more
appropriate.

Getting dozens of "Me, too!" responses after someone has offered to
provide some information or service is inconsiderate and
unreasonable. Especially if they quote large parts of the original
post. Read the posts thoroughly, and respond by personal e-mail if
appropriate -- even if that means you have to jot down the
individual's e-mail address and type it back in by hand.

OBSCURISM: The practice of peppering daily life with obscure references as
a subliminal means of showcasing both one's education and one's wish to
disassociate from the world of mass culture.
