Museum architecture
San Diego museum conservation---sorry, I forgot to note your name
before responding. We at the Stanford University Museum of Art are
beginning a similar ordeal. You might contact the Getty for some
information regarding especially the seismic questions and also the
Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. With regard to facilities, my
personal opinion is that the new collections management facilities
of the Smithsonian---which handle all sorts of materials---are
excellent, and you may wish to contact them for general discussions.
It is amazing how many things confront one confronts in this
profession that are never even mentioned in school!
Good luck, and perhaps we can commiserate in the future. We have
worked up an extensive program and hired an architect and are now
proceeding with conceptual discussions. You might also want to
glance at the Joan Darragh & James Snyder, "Museum Design: Planning
and Building for Art (Oxford, 1993) which I've found to be an
excellent guide.

University Museum of Art
