Activism relies heavily on the use of materials and bodies as modes of action and aesthetics to effect power and change. Depending on cultural ways of ‘doing’ and ‘making’, differing political, ethical, aesthetic and moral states and values, come to be associated with activism and activist practices. Determining the effects of these practices is, thus, a socio-culturally relational process. 

While keeping in mind contextual specifics, this symposium will explore the connections between activist and artistic practice in the US, Thailand, and Indonesia via the research and work of Dr. Angela Beallor (Artist-Organizer, MDOCS Co-Creation Initiative, Skidmore College), Dr. Anissa Rahadiningtyas (Asst. Curator of Islamic Aesthetics in Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asia, National Gallery Singapore), Citra Sasmita (Artist), and Peera Songkünnatham (Writer-Translator). 

Approached from an anthropologically-informed perspective on techniques, actions, and materials, the beliefs and practices invoked in these varied instances will be related to both local and global horizons of possibilities. 

The speakers on our panel are authors from The Jugaad Project's (TJP) Fall 2022 issue on "material activism". www.thejugaadproject.pub They will share their reflections on processual aspects of activism both in their own lives as well as through the themes of their articles.
