Thank you, Mel. I always thought freezing was the way to go but have been informed that the process has proven to be ineffective on a number of occasions with museum staff having discovered that the pests only really hibernated and were reawakened under the museum lights while on exhibition. No one wants a vitrine full of angry, trapped moths on display let alone loose in storage!

We have used a commercial company in the past who was well-versed in sub zero (-40°) freezing for museum objects and had success in that case, but those objects were all able to be frozen without compromising any of their materials.

In regards to collections fumigation, I don't believe chemicals are used. Referring to museumpests.net they discuss carbon dioxide or oxygen scavenger treatments that do not require the use of chemicals. I'm curious if anyone has undergone either of these treatments or any others with their collections as opposed to freezing. Anyone who can speak to instances in which they chose fumigation and how that went, as well as those who might have companies they can recommend to do so would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, all!
