The National Park Service (NPS) History Collection has two full-time, paid internships available. Each internship lasts 1200 hours (c. 7.5 months).
Location: NPS History Collection, Harpers Ferry Center, Charles Town, WV
Salary: $15.00/hour
Benefits: Paid federal holidays off. Interns also earn 4 hours of paid leave per 80 hours worked (60 hours over the course of a 1200-hour internship) to be used as sick leave or vacation pay. Healthcare and other benefits are not provided.
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Full time (40 hours per week).
Impacts due to Covid-19: Social distancing and wearing of face masks in common areas is required within the facility. All safety protocols must be followed. Due to the pandemic, interns may need to telework locally for one or more days per week on a recurring basis. Scheduled telework days may vary from week to week given approved building occupancy levels and to accommodate other programmatic needs. Therefore flexibility is a must. In the event of a complete building shutdown for safety reasons, interns will be expected to telework for longer periods. Computer hardware and software are provided for telework situations but interns must have their own access to the internet at their residences. Telework only applies to entering metadata for the digital files. All scanning work and handling of original materials must be done within the museum collection facility. As such, initial efforts will focus primarily on scanning, to provide flexibility and work during telework periods. Interns must relocate to the Charles Town, WV area for this position.
Job Summary: Incumbent will safely handle archival materials to digitize the NPS Wild Life Photo Card File, a series within the NPS History Photograph Collection. Digitize photograph cards to FADGI 3-star standards, following written procedures for use of scanning equipment. Create archival master, preservation master, and use copies for each scanned photograph card. Embed metadata in each digital file, consistent with the NPS History Collection metadata practices and data dictionary. Routinely back up work to prevent losses. Experience using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, Teracopy, and ICMS/Re:Discovery software programs is beneficial but training will be provided as needed. All computer hardware and software needed to accomplish this project will be provided.

Qualifications: Student or recent graduate in Archives Management, Library and Information Science, or Museum Studies. Applicants must be enrolled students or have graduated within the past 12 months. Attention to detail is a must, as is the ability to retain focus while working at computers for extended periods of time. Applicants must have the ability to present oral and written information in a clear and concise manner.
Other Requirements: The internship is paid through the National Center for Preservation Education (NCPE). Direct deposit of paycheck is required. A valid driver’s license is required for this position. US citizenship is required. Successful candidates must pass the National Park Service’s background security investigation process. This process must be started at least one month before anticipated start date and internship cannot start without this clearance.
Other information: Housing is not provided but may be found in the local area. Own transportation required as no public transport is available.
